NBC actually showing USA Hockey live

The reaction and critique of NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics, from the perspective of hockey fans, has been downright ugly so far.  The network, and their 'family of networks' such as CNBC, MSNBC, and USA, have struggled to provide consistency and accuracy of coverage for puck heads.  Many thought the zenith of anger towards the Peacock Network would have been reached last Sunday with the network's decision not to televise the Team USA versus Canada showdown on broadcast network, opting instead of televise it on MSNBC.

But when outrage spread like wildfire about Wednesday's lack of live coverage in the western half of the country for the Team USA quarterfinal match against Switzerland, shown three hours later on tape-delay, NBC realized that for the safety of their employees and affiliates, they needed to change that policy moving forward.

So today, American hockey fans across the country will get to see the semifinal game versus Finland live at 3PM Eastern and 12 Noon Pacific on the main over-the-air broadcast network of NBC.  No word yet on whether they will still, as currently scheduled, show the gold medal game Sunday on tape delay if the United States is participating in it though.

To find out more, go to this website: http://www.mahalo.com/olympic-hockey-2010

By the way, anyone saying that "...if you are old enough to remember that the famous 'Miracle on Ice' game was also showed on tape delay by ABC, then you have no right to complain about it here..." is not understanding at all how different the times were with no prevelance of cable/satellite television, no sports radio, no internet, virtually no way for people to know the outcome.  And it just wouldn't happen this way today.

Oh, and if you are an NHL fan disappointed that NBC is doing you this way, why are you surprised?  Remember that it was just last year that NBC forced the NHL to play the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals on consecutive weekend days in June because they did not Game Two, which would aired on a Monday night, to go into overtime and delay the first broadcast of Conan O'Brien in his new role as host of the Tonight Show.  If NBC only knew then what they know now about how that late night arrangement would work itself out...

Health Care Summit Today

President Barack Obama is taking another step towards getting meaning health care reform passed during his presidency today by hosting a summit at Blair House featuring major congressional leaders from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

He is also making it available for regular citizens such as you and me to "peek in" at these discussions and meetings by allowing for them to be televised live on major television cable networks today.  In doing so, he keeps a campaign pledge to make government more transparent, and especially on an issue as important as this one clearly is, I think it's important to applaude what he is attempting to do, both in making this a more open process and the actual process itself.  They say that there are two things that you never want the public at-large to see you make: sausage and laws.  But in this instance, on an issue so imprtant to the country and to his presidency, its important to acknowledge what President Obama is doing today.

At Mahalo.com, I'll be trying to update the page we've built regarding the summit, which you can view by clicking on the link below:

Additionally, we'll be keeping an eye on other breaking stories of interest which are causing a great deal of buzz around the internet, so be sure to check back on Mahalo's home page frequently.

This guy also wrote quite the manifesto explaining his bizarre behavior just before the crash. Wild stuff man, wild stuff.

Olympics Coverage on NBC is awful

Anyone who has suffered through the unwatchable feature stories by Collinsworth and Carillo, the tired set ups by Costas, and the inability to handle the simple over-run of curling events into hockey games on secondary networks, will all agree that there is a reason why NBC is 8th among the 5 major US television networks.

Gann Matsuda, who covers the LA Kings for Frozen Royalty, wrote an article about the uproar today.  Be sure to read it and let Gann know how right he is, and how wrong NBC has been in just a week of coverage.

Men's Olympic Hockey Starts Today

The 2010 Winter Olympics have been underway for five days.  But for many, the most anticipated part of the 17-day event begins today with the start of the Men's Ice Hockey tournament.  Twelve countries are taking part in the tournament, which starts with a week's worth of preliminary round action.  Each team will play three games over the next six days, to determine seeding for the second week of action when the single elimination tournament begins.

Out of the 12 teams, half are given legitimate shots at playing for a medal.  Three of those figure to be Team Finland, the Czech Republic team, and the defending gold medalists from Team Sweden.  Team Russia has a ton of scoring talent and figures to be in the running for a gold.

But the two teams with the most focus thrust upon them are obviously Team USA and Team Canada.  These games are on Canadian soil, and there is no question that anything less than a gold medal will be considered unacceptable by the home country.

As for Team USA, they are a young team with not a lot of international experience that will need to play smart and defensive oriented hockey.  They will need to not beat themselves by being razor-sharp mentally, and they will need their goaltender to play the best two weeks of hockey in his entire life.  Sound familiar?  In this the 30th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice team from 1980, it should.

But unlike past years, when NBC simply put all of the hockey on one cable channel or pay-per-view, they're bouncing it around this year.  So if you are looking for when and where to watch the hockey action, look no further than the page we just created for you on Mahalo:

Lost Generation Video - Must See

Back in 2007, AARP held a video contest on YouTube asking people between the ages of 18-30 to imagine their lives at 50 years old.  One of the videos that finished in the top five was "Lost Generation" by Georgia State University student Jonathan Reed.  The video came in 2nd place, but only recently has taken on a life of its own.  To date, it has been viewed more than 11 million times.  I enjoyed it, and I hope you will too.
